e-Learning is training delivered through digital means, so people can learn wherever and whenever it suits their work. Learn what e-Learning includes, why organizations use it, and what makes it effective.
eLearning is training delivered through digital means: a course on a laptop, a module on a phone, a simulation on a tablet on the factory floor. Instead of gathering people in a room at a fixed time, you bring the training to them, wherever they are and whenever it suits the work.
The term covers a wide range. At one end sits a short video with a few questions. At the other sits a full programme with scenarios, branching decisions, assessments and a certificate. What they share is that the learner works through the content themselves, at their own pace, and the system can see whether they did.
The obvious reason is reach. A classroom session trains the people who can be in that room on that day. A digital module trains everyone, including shift workers, field teams, contractors and partners in other countries, without repeating the session twelve times.
The less obvious reason is consistency. When ten trainers deliver the same course, you get ten versions of it. When the training is built once and distributed digitally, every learner gets the same content, the same examples and the same standard, and you can prove it.
Digital delivery on its own changes nothing. If you take a slide deck, put it online and add a next button, you have moved a weak training session onto a screen. People click through it, tick the box and forget it within days.
eLearning works when it asks something of the learner: recall a fact, judge a situation, make a decision and see the consequence. That is a design question, not a technology question.
Because instructional design sits at the core of the platform, FLOWSPARKS helps teams build eLearning that people remember and apply, rather than content they simply click through.
They are largely used as synonyms. Where a distinction is drawn, eLearning tends to mean self-paced digital modules, while online training can also include live virtual classrooms with a trainer present in real time.
Most work best between five and twenty minutes. Beyond that, attention drops and completion suffers. Longer subjects are better split into several short modules with one objective each than delivered as a single long course.
For knowledge and procedures, usually yes, and it reaches far more people. For skills that need practice with others, such as difficult conversations, a blended approach combining digital modules with live sessions works better.
